“”Autumn shows us how beautiful it is to let things go.” -Unknown
As we transition into the fall season, this is the perfect time to harness the energy of change and renewal to declutter and organize our homes. Summer brings fun times- picnics, lake days, pool days, and late bedtimes. This lack of structure is welcome, but not conducive to getting things done. Now that school is back in session and the weather is a bit cooler, our schedules have tightened up and our energy to accomplish has picked up!
This time to accomplish will be short lived! As you know, the holidays are knocking at the door. And with the holidays, comes decorating, baking, party planning and parties to attend. Again, no time to accomplish chores in our homes. So, buckle up. Now is the time!
Here are some tips to help you make the most of this time:
– Start with a plan: Before diving into decluttering, take some time to assess your space and create a plan of action. Identify areas that need the most attention and prioritize your tasks.
– Take advantage of the cooler weather: With the temperatures dropping, now is a great time to tackle those projects that may have been put off during the summer months. This is the perfect time to spend sprucing up the garage.

Organize the garage, so a car or two can fit!
I have organized garages in January, in Minnesota. This is not ideal. But my clients needed to get their cars in the garage, so they would start on frigid mornings. Avoid this at all costs. Do it now! An important aspect of the garage that I organized above, was that all the contents of the cabinets were labeled on the outside. There were many people using the garage. So, we needed to be sure that things got put back in the correct spot.
– Embrace the spirit of fall: Use the cozy and comforting vibes of the fall season as motivation to create a warm and inviting home. Consider adding seasonal decorations, such as pumpkins, candles, and throw blankets, to enhance the ambiance of your space.

– Donate or sell items that you no longer need: As you declutter, consider donating or selling items that no longer serve a purpose in your home. Not only will this help you create more space, but it will also benefit others in need. If you need help finding places to donate, recycle, or sell your items, refer to the Recycle/Dontate page on my website, www.keystolivinglight.com. This page contains an extensive list of resources.
– Get the whole family involved: Decluttering and organizing your home can be a fun and rewarding activity for the whole family. Get everyone involved in the process. Assign tasks and make it a team effort to create a more organized and harmonious living space.
I love this article, which is full of tips to help get the children involved. Taking the time to do this will teach them organizing skills. They will take ownership of the spaces and be proud of their accomplishments.

Children can help with organizing and clean up.
The “clean up song” is a great motivator for my grandchildren to pick up their toys and put them where they belong. The photo above shows one of my grandsons trying to beat the song!
