In today’s fast-paced world, it’s becoming increasingly important to have a calm and relaxing space to unwind in. With the constant stimulation and stress of modern life, our bedrooms should be a sanctuary where we can retreat and rejuvenate. A calming bedroom can help us to sleep better, reduce stress levels, and improve our overall well-being. On two separate occasions, I was hired to make a calm space for my clients undergoing cancer treatment.  They needed a place to find peace and heal.

Here we’ll explore some of the key elements of a calm bedroom and provide tips on how to create a peaceful and serene space.

Soft Lighting

One of the most important aspects of a calm bedroom is lighting. Soft, warm lighting can create a relaxing ambiance and help to calm our nervous system. Harsh, bright lighting can have the opposite effect and make us feel anxious and stressed. If possible, try to use dimmer switches to control the lighting in your bedroom, or use lamps with soft, warm light bulbs.

Calming Colors

The colors we use in our bedrooms can have a significant impact on our mood and emotions. To create a calming atmosphere, it’s best to stick to muted, neutral tones such as beige, pale blue, or grey. These colors are calming and soothing and can help to promote relaxation and sleep. Cool colors such as blue and green are reminiscent of nature.  Avoid using bright or bold colors as these can be overstimulating and can make it harder to wind down at night.

Comfortable Bedding

Comfortable bedding is essential for a calm bedroom. Choose high-quality sheets, blankets, and pillows that feel soft and cozy against your skin. Invest in a good mattress and pillows that provide adequate support for your body. If possible, choose bedding made from natural fibers such as cotton, bamboo, or linen, as these are breathable and help to regulate your body temperature while you sleep

Declutter

Clutter can be a significant source of stress and can make it difficult to relax in your bedroom. To create a calming space, try to keep your bedroom clutter-free. Remove any unnecessary items, such as piles of laundry, books, or papers, and keep surfaces clear and tidy. Use storage solutions such as under-bed storage boxes or hanging organizers to keep your belongings organized and out of sight.

Nature-Inspired Decor

Create a calm space with lavender

Bringing elements of nature into your bedroom can help to create a calm and relaxing atmosphere. Use natural materials such as wood, stone, or plants to add a sense of tranquility to your space. Incorporate natural textures, such as a woven rug or linen curtains, and add greenery with potted plants or a vase of fresh flowers.

Aromatherapy

Aromatherapy can be a powerful tool for promoting relaxation and reducing stress levels. Use essential oils such as lavender, chamomile, or bergamot in a diffuser or spray bottle to create a soothing scent in your bedroom. You can also add a few drops of essential oil to your pillowcase or sheets to help promote a peaceful night’s sleep.

Noise Reduction

Excessive noise can be a significant source of stress and can make it hard to relax in your bedroom. To reduce noise levels, try using soundproof curtains or a white noise machine to block out external noise. You can also use earplugs or headphones if you’re particularly sensitive to noise.

Mindful Decor

Incorporating mindful decor into your bedroom can help to create a space that promotes relaxation and calmness. Choose artwork or decor that inspires you and makes you feel peaceful. This could be a piece of abstract art, a photograph of nature, or a calming quote or mantra that you can read before going to bed. Battery operated candles are safe and calming.

Technology-Free

Remove work related items, desk, exercise equipment

If at all possible, remove these items from your bedroom.  They can be constant reminders of “to do’s” that don’t allow for rest.

Creating a calm, restful bedroom can be a form of self-care.  We need a space like this to promote good physical and emotional health.
